Working Out FAQs

When I do an abs workout my neck always hurts more than my abs and it’s a struggle to finish my sets. How can I stop the neck pain?
Try putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth, and look up to the ceiling when you do crunches, it will help align your head, which helps to reduce neck strain.

How long should I hold stretches for?
If you’re under 40, hold your stretch for 30 seconds. If you’re over 40, hold for 60 seconds. This is because your muscles become less pliable as you age.

I find it hard to complete a set weights workout and towards the end it becomes boring; what can I do?
If you never finish your workout, start with the exercises you enjoy the least. That way you’ll look forward to your favourite exercise at the end and feel more motivated that you completed an entire session. Or, why not try a different kind of workout, like an exercise class, for a break in your normal routine?

I’ve been working my abs for ages but my belly is still plump. How many abs exercises should I be doing every week?
Don’t work your abs everyday as they are like any other muscle. So train them only two to three times a week. Researchers at the University of Virginia in the US showed that it takes 250,000 crunches to burn one pound of fat.

I don’t want to become a female bodybuilder; will I get big if I do weights?
Although women have the capacity to increase strength and muscle density, they do not possess the natural steroid levels to undergo radical muscle growth experienced by most men. Weight training can be used to build strength and tone your muscles without looking like Arnie. So, if you’re keen to have a go, ask a member of the gym team to help you create a workout programme.
